Review: Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)

Pitch Perfect 2 starts as it means to go on; choreographed pop mash ups and a fantastic politically incorrect joke (literally), which puts a great big smile on your face that will barely leave you for the 115 minutes run time.

Eliazbeth Banks, on directing duty as well as playing one half of the best co-commentating duo since Dodgeball (and Pitch Perfect, obviously), does a great job of hitting you with all the best loved beats and characterisations from the first film, whilst not really building on anything.

As such the film feels joke driven rather than story driven. The plot, such as it is, seems like just a flimsy excuse to get the characters back on screen and have fun with them; of which I wholeheartedly approve!

It’s been 3 years since we last saw the Bellas and the intervening time has been good to the girls; three time Collegiate Accapella champions and about to embark on a countrywide tour. However, thanks to Fat Amy, a Presidential faux pas and a band of evil German Nemeses, things don’t carry on quite so smoothly.

Once again Fat Amy and Bumper get the best lines and steal every scene they’re in but, as ever this is a great ensemble cast and they all get a chance to show off their wares.

All our favourite tropes from the first film are there like the battle sequence, done just differently enough to still feel fresh and bring something to the film.
