Review

Tarantino gets a lot of stick for his movies. He is accused of using too much violence, misogyny, and gratuitous exploitation. I sometime wonder what other people are watching. His latest movie is no exception, and all sorts have spent much energy going on and on about everything from the number of lines given to the female cast to the ultra comic book violence. Have they never watched a Tarantino movie before?

One critic looking for a different angle criticises the lingering shots of women’s feet (and how dirty they are – literally). Tarantino loves women’s feet, I don’t know if that is good or bad or if he lingers just a bit too long but just about every movie he makes features women’s feet. It is almost his trademark. If you think the feet shots are odd in this movie then you can’t have seen any of his other work.

The truth for me is Tarantino as a film maker is he the closest thing we have to a genius. His films are often difficult to watch, almost painful – at times, always surprising, always fun – in places, and oddly moral. Most of all, Tarantino movies are entertaining.

All of the above is true for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. If you are old(ish) and know something of the story of those times you may find this one even harder to watch. I almost left the viewing at one point because I did not want to see what comes next, but stick with it. If you are young and know nothing of those times sit back and enjoy the tension and feel the essence of Hollywood in the 60s

This is a five star movie – Go see it! – Probably more than once
