Review: Haywire (2012)

Haywire can only be described as 007 meets Jason Bourne but for females. A surprisingly quiet promotional campaign for an A-List cast featuring Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Bill Paxton is very odd. What is even more unusual is the lead, Gina Carano, a Mixed Martial Arts expert and World Extreme Fighter.  Relatively unknown in the acting world, being cast in a lead role with a team full of heavy weights must have been daunting, however there may have been certain reasons behind this. Reasons maybe based on the fact that her acting may not be on the same level as the long list of veterans.

The plot of Haywire forms around Mallory (Carano) an ex-Marine and operative in the Private ˜defence’ Sector. Danger looms around every corner in her line of work however when being at the top of your game, nothing is too impossible. This changes when your soon to be ex-employer Kenneth (Ewan McGregor) decides to sends her on missions around the world, ending with one last scheme that may not be as it seems. A ˜holiday’ it is not, never believe anyone in the business of deceit is definitely lesson one. Now on the run from McGregor, and various other colleagues, who all seem to be men, she faces a fight for her life. Also trying to save a young man she has dragged into her crazy world.

Haywire‘s  first scene throws the audience right into the action, and within minutes a violent and abrupt fight breaks out between two main characters. You soon realise why they cast Carano as the main character as her attitude is tough, her brawling skills excellent, when she kicks ass you know she means it. The only grievance I have with her is that her acting skills lack believability, or more simply she cannot act. I desperately wanted her to be better than she was, purely because I found the whole film entertaining, although slightly shallow. Aggression is the driving force behind her, which may have worked on projects before. Some training in the ways of the silver screen may not go a miss.
